Risks and Protective Factors of Online Gambling in Adult Populations

Online Gambling is the act of placing bets on a game played through an Internet connection. This can include sports betting, casino games or poker. It is available in many countries and has become a popular pastime for people around the world. It can also provide a form of escapism from daily stressors and help players release feel-good hormones that can improve concentration and mental health. However, gambling can lead to serious financial problems and psychological disorders, especially among children and young adults. Therefore, it is important to talk with your kids about the risks of online gambling and help them develop healthy coping strategies.

While most people only gamble to have some fun, a few get swept up in an addiction that causes them to lose a large amount of money and spend their lives trying to make back those losses. This is known as compulsive or pathological gambling and can be treated with various therapies and medications. Some of these therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, are particularly effective in treating gambling addiction. Medications, such as antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs, are often used to treat gambling addiction in addition to therapy.

This paper reviews the current state of knowledge regarding risk and protective factors related to online gambling in adult populations. A synthesis of the literature shows that although there are some differences between online and offline gambling, the majority of studies report common factors in both settings. However, there are several critical issues that need to be addressed in future research, such as the use of nonrepresentative samples and the lack of longitudinal studies.
