There is a sense in which it is easy to be cynical about people who play the lottery. These are people who go in with their eyes wide open, knowing that the odds of winning are long. They are willing to spend $50 or $100 a week, and they have all sorts of quote-unquote systems that do not jibe with statistical reasoning.
