A casino is a place where games of chance are played and gambling is the primary activity of patrons. Typically casinos also offer additional luxuries to attract and retain players such as restaurants, free drinks and stage shows. But even if these facilities did not exist, places that allow the playing of games of chance and the betting of money would still be called a casino.
The people who frequent casinos vary widely in age, ethnicity and socioeconomic status, but they all share a sense of fun and excitement that makes the blaring music, clinking coins and flashing lights almost irresistible. While the casino may be an arena for skulduggery and treachery, it is a place where people can let down their guards and simply enjoy themselves.
While table games such as blackjack and poker provide a challenge of strategy and wits, slot machines are pure chance with little room for skill. Modern slot machines range from those with physical spinning reels to those that replicate the reels on a video screen, but they all operate in the same basic way: insert currency, select your bet amount, press spin and hope for the best.
The cast of Casino is one of the finest in Scorsese’s long career and it includes a number of legendary performers such as Sharon Stone, Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta. The film is over three hours long but it never lags and remains a lean, mean thriller throughout.
